Radio LibreMente is a means of expression and social communication through which the people imprisoned in the Monterroso UTE convey their opinions and experiences, as well as a space for engaging with people from outside.
Through the Service-Learning methodology, from ECIGAL and the OCV of the UdC we sought to encourage the participation of almost 70 students who held discussions with prisoners about hate speech (module on Participatory Action-Research, Community Action and Management of Social Organisations, Master’s in Social Policies and Socio-Community Intervention), on leisure time and leisure within prison institutions (Resources and Strategies for Leisure-Time Intervention, Bachelor’s in Social Education), or who acted as external reporters, producing podcasts to be integrated into the Radio LibreMente programmes (Education and Social Media, Bachelor’s in Social Education).
In doing so, we contribute to the promotion of critical and transformative methodologies that ECIGAL champions, in a learning experience that is highly valuable for both the students and the prisoners.
Pending authorisation from the General Secretariat of Prisons, we will soon be able to broadcast the programmes beyond the prison walls. For the time being, we are sharing some of the work produced by the students on the Social Education and Social Communication course.
Radio LibreMente is promoted by the association Aliad Ultreia, the free software association Melisa, the Grupo SEPA-interea and ECIGAL, within the Socio-Cultural Animation Plan of the Monterroso Penitentiary Centre, which finances the Obra Social La Caixa.
