RESEARCH PROJECTS
Critical Global Citizenship through collaborative research with young people (2024-2028)
The proposed research aims to address global problems such as climate change, inequality, hate speech or xenophobia from the perspective of young people themselves. Although both national and international research has identified trends of apathy and disconnection from political and civic life among young people, it is true that the adult-centred approaches of today’s society do not provide the tools to spark their interest and encourage their participation. Through the identification, training and advice of groups of young people researching global challenges (JIRG), we aim to break their sense of powerlessness and repair their institutional exclusion from the major debates and action plans promoted by global organisations, involving these young people as global, critical and active citizens in the construction of their own future.
Promoting youth leadership in non-formal contexts (2023-2024)
Solidariedade Internacional de Galicia is driving this project, which aims to contribute to improving the social participation of Galician youth, especially those in situations of vulnerability and/or social exclusion.
Also involved in this process are the Galician cooperative Cidadanía and the ECIGAL research group. We want to work with four participation initiatives led by groups of young people in vulnerable situations (associated with poverty, discrimination and marginalisation related to ethnicity, gender, migration processes, situations of lack of protection, etc.) in the Galician territory.
We want to analyse with them the experiences of activism and participation in which young people are involved, identifying guidelines for the practice of ECG in promoting participatory and youth-led processes.
Mapping Critical Global Citizenship Education in Spanish Schools (2021)
This project allows the mapping focus to be extended to experiences at the national level. A study enriched with qualitative interviews with three types of informants: primary school teachers; specialists in the teaching of the experimental sciences, mathematics or languages; and NGOs with experience in the field.
Investigating the territory to learn about and recognise ECG experiences (III)
This project constitutes the third phase of creating a cartographic map to identify references in education for global citizenship, extending the proposal to experiences developed in university centres. It is complemented by the interest in delving into initiatives that link ECG to the curriculum, for which a process of identifying good practices in this area will be initiated.
Click against unwanted loneliness (with the Esplai Foundation)
With older people, we explored how to create informal support networks through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a way of preventing and addressing unwanted loneliness, a trend of particular concern among people in this age group.
Investigating the territory to get to know and recognise the educational centres that work on education for development and global citizenship in Galicia (II) 2019-2020
This project is presented as a continuation of the previous one, with the aim of generating references.
To this end, we decided to create, based on mapping and also as a consequence of the pandemic situation, a digital map that allows experiences to be made visible and networks to be created among people interested in the field of education for global citizenship. 1st Edition of the Galician Award for Education for Development and Global Citizenship.
Investigating the territory to get to know and recognise the educational centres that work on education for development and global citizenship in Galicia (I) 2018-2019
The project sets out a twofold objective: to understand and recognise the experiences of Education for Development and Global Citizenship taking place in Galician schools and, at the same time, to promote reflection on the meaning and practice of this approach with a view to its improvement.
Social mapping was used as an action-research methodology, designing a mapping room as an information-gathering tool for mapping the experiences.
And through a participatory process with teachers and NGO agents experienced in EPDCG, the Galician Award for Education for Development and Global Citizenship was designed.
Investigating the global dimension of education for development in compulsory secondary education and in higher education at universities in Galicia 2017-2018
Work in schools has highlighted the need for teacher training. Thus, this project focused on initial training: we introduced ICT into our subjects, with the support of SI-G and AGARESO, using different dynamics, making use of the communicative resources offered by new technologies and putting the students at the centre of their learning.
The integration of this topic is something we continue to maintain within the degrees in early childhood education, primary education, social education, and the teacher training master’s degree.
Investigating the global dimension of education for development. An IAP pilot project in a school in Galicia (II) 2016–2017
In this second phase, we worked on the processes of implementation and the collection and analysis of data for an IAP project. We used an emic perspective (gathering teachers’ classroom evaluations to provide an internal view) and an etic perspective (participating in and observing practices from an external standpoint). We also analysed the inter-institutional relationships that emerged during the collaboration.
Investigating the global dimension of education for development. An IAP pilot project in a school in Galicia (I) 2015–2016
In the first phase of an IAP project, we formed a collaboration between university specialists in mathematics teaching, natural sciences, social sciences and languages, and the teaching staff of a rural CPI to integrate ECG as a whole-school project. We took time to familiarise the teaching staff with the proposed research processes and to design a Comprehensive Action Plan.
Exploring the possibilities of extending the global dimension of Education for Sustainable Development in compulsory secondary education. A diagnostic study in educational centres in Galicia 2014–2015
In the previous project it was noted that the ECG was closely linked to certain subjects (philosophy, social sciences, etc.), and we wanted to find out what the problems and resistances of teachers from other curricular areas were. To this end, six micro-studies were carried out in schools, focusing on the secondary education stage.
Investigating education for development: a case study on the implementation of the "Treasures of Acahualinca" project 2013–2014
This project responds to the concern of Solidariedade Internacional de Galicia to have a coherent and impactful practice in educational centres: they sought an external evaluation and to verify the impact of their actions towards ecological and social transformation, in a multicultural and globalised context. To this end, 11 projects implemented by the NGO between 2002 and 2012 were analysed, and a case study was carried out on the most recent project developed to date (The Treasure of Acahualinca), with the participation of students and teaching staff.
