The Zenith map of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) experiences is a tool created with the aim of generating a space to get to know, question, reflect and advance together in overcoming the reductionist and testimonial approach of ECG. Mapping experiences allows not only for their identification but also for negotiating meanings, exploring problems, sharing solutions and generating collaborative networks, both present and future.

It is, therefore, a temporal, open and dynamic map, under construction and in constant update, which will allow us to understand the present (always alive) and to outline future possibilities for action.

Discover the map

The map geolocates experiences organised into four layers (which can be activated or deactivated). The experiences icon allows you to identify the initiative’s main theme, its disciplinary or interdisciplinary curricular link, and its multi-level nature. By clicking on each of the experiences, you can access more information about them.

An interesting feature of the application is that it allows you to filter the experiences according to your interests

History

It was in the first cartographic room that the idea of digitising the shared experiences arose. After a year of work, together with the Advanced Visualisation and Cartography Group (Cartolab), it materialised into a software application which was launched in September 2020. This application aims not only to visualise and disseminate the experiences already mapped, but also to encourage the collection of new initiatives, and, why not, to promote the expansion of a state-of-the-art ECG (of which examples are shown as a point of reference) and even enable the creation of collaborative networks between centres and entities.

Who is launching the initiative?

The project

Since 2013 to the present, the NGO Solidariedade Internacional de Galicia and the ECIGAL Research Group have been reinforcing the idea that it is important to move beyond the approach that reduces Education for Global Citizenship (EGC) in the education system to sporadic and isolated experiences. We have identified a significant number of practising professionals who are carrying out very interesting initiatives, either individually or collaboratively, with social entities.

In light of this reality, we consider it essential to understand the state of the issue as a starting point for weaving a network of centres and organisations working in ECG, as well as establishing lines of collaboration and shared learning. The map serves this dual purpose.

Participate!

Cartography as a tool

Social mapping, as a methodology of research and action, allows for the collaborative and participatory mapping of experiences. The instrument designed for this was the cartographic room, developed in person with academic staff and organisations that helped with its construction and validation. The software application corresponds to the translation of this tool into an online format, which aims to facilitate both the collection of new experiences and the visibility and dissemination of those already mapped.

Despite having this tool, we do not want to lose the advantages that the in-person celebration of the mapping rooms offers in promoting dialogical processes of reflection and joint analysis, and our intention is to continue holding meetings for a collective exercise in knowledge, representation and problematisation of reality, through participation and commitment.

Objectives

Recognise and showcase ECG initiatives

To learn about references for getting started with ECG

Serve as a source of reference for organisations, educational centres and ECG experiences

Provide an ECG resource bank

Create community and build networks to reflect and move forward together

EDUCATION FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

The concept of Education for Global Citizenship (ECG) is constantly being reviewed because it is a dynamic concept that adapts to a complex and changing reality. For Edgar Morin (2010), GCE is an ethical strategy for ecosocial transformation, through collaborative and committed learning in the construction of just and solidarity-based societies, which is based on complex thinking as a learning model, and incorporates uncertainty, ecodependence and co-responsibility as characteristics of the process, towards understanding, and the intellectual and moral solidarity of humanity.

Horizon 2030

Its objective is to promote positive leadership among young people, taking the 2030 Agenda as a reference to “act as watchdogs for the implementation of public policies to combat poverty” and drawing on the experience of local counterparts in the field.
