The Faculty of Education Sciences at the UDC was awarded the prize in the university teaching category at the third edition of the Premio Galego de Educación para o Desenvolvemento e a Cidadanía Global, promoted by the Galician Coordinator of NGOs for Development.
The award-winning initiative Body mapping: two hateful discourses on a shared pleasure was developed in the 2022/23 academic year, in the modules ‘Socio-educational Action with Minorities and Vulnerable Groups’ and ‘Resources and Strategies for Leisure-Time Intervention’ of the third year of the Bachelor’s degree in Social Education. Coordinated by the lecturers Laura Cruz and María Barba of the group Ecigal, the experience involved 72 students, 14 social organisations and more than 130 people in vulnerable situations.
In this service-learning experience, which was intended to respond to a request from the Campaign Network for Peace and the Right to Asylum, the students collected and analysed hate speech, recording the impacts it has on their own bodies and on those of vulnerable people. Using knowledge from the Global South, they constructed a collective narrative through bodily cartographies, which they then presented in a public exhibition to raise awareness among the citizenry. Furthermore, in order to subvert these hate narratives, they created spaces for coexistence through leisure activities with the same organisations and collectives; enjoyable experiences with which to break down imposed social fragmentations.
On this website, in the Transfer section, you can access a sample of the body maps created by the students and participants of the collaborating organisations. The project has also been included on the map Climax of experiences in education for global citizenship along with other examples concerning the promotion of global social justice through education.
The hall Agustín Magán of the Santa Marta Social and Cultural Centre in Santiago de Compostela welcomed the Wednesday 19 June at 11:00, the award ceremony.
