Who We Are?
The ECIGAL research group at the University of A Coruña (Spain) is dedicated to promoting and researching Education for Global Citizenship (EGC) and other critical and transformative educations. We understand EGC as an ethical strategy for ecosocial transformation, through collaborative and committed learning towards the construction of just and solidarity-based societies.
We develop significant work connecting formal education institutions (such as schools and universities) with other relevant social actors, such as NGOs and other organisations. Likewise, from the perspective of social education, we work in different educational and community contexts, promoting critical and transformative processes that contribute to social and environmental justice.
We prioritise the use of participatory research methodologies and the development of critical (digital) literacies that can help us to identify, reinterpret and deconstruct global inequalities.
In 2013, a group of female researchers from the University of A Coruña (UdC) began an Educational Development (EpD) research project in collaboration with the NGO Solidaridad Internacional de Galicia (SIG).
Since then, we have continuously developed collaborative action-research projects, funded by the Xunta de Galicia through competitive calls. Each project addresses problems or concerns that arose in the previous one.
After years of working in primary and secondary schools, we turned our attention to university-level training and introduced ECG into our courses, with the support of SIG and AGARESO, using a variety of dynamic approaches, drawing on the communicative resources offered by new technologies and making students the protagonists of their own learning.
The inclusion of this topic is something we continue to maintain within the degrees in early childhood education, primary education, social education, and the master's degree in teacher training.

We initiated a social mapping process as a strategy to connect NGOs and teaching staff involved in developing ECG projects. This resulted in a digital map that enables people to get in touch, gain in-depth knowledge of projects, identify methodologies or themes, and recover programmes and experiences, etc.
As a result of years of work, we created the University of A Coruña's Global Citizenship Education Research Group (ECIGAL), which brings together researchers from the Faculty of Education with experience in this field. With this, we aim to continue the previous line of work; to strengthen the work on Global Citizenship Education (ECG) within the Galician university system; as well as to expand into new research and action spaces and new collaborations with public and private entities.
